Land-ho: The best views in Grey Bruce

Land-ho: The best views in Grey Bruce
Land-ho: The best views in Grey Bruce By Nelson Phillips , Wiarton Echo Tuesday, March 31, 2015 9:27:45 EDT AM Last July, I wrote a piece entitled “The top 6 local swimming spots,” wherein I lightheartedly refused to outright give the locations away to the seasonal visitors, using local nicknames and location descriptions rather than blatantly providing Google map coordinates.  For this, I’m happy. I’m still content with my decision. With all the hoopla over Sauble paid parking lately, I’ll re-post that column on our website for those who have forgotten that while Sauble is indeed awesome - the Bruce is literally covered in immaculate watering holes that are off the beaten path, and don’t require your change.  But look-outs? I’ll happily share.  Geography and    topography  we’ve got   around here. Plenty of it. From  flat lands, to escarpment bluffs, to lighthouses, to “mountains” and towers, Grey Bruce brings new meaning to the term “scenic route.”  But scenic look-out’s are restricted to height - we’ve got plenty of stunning views planted firmly on the shores, too.  Plus - it’s spring (I think). I feel like sharing today. If you’re new to exploring our area, welcome - and good luck...

Break in Collingwood

Break in Collingwood
Before the camping season begins, we took a few days off and went to visit Collingwood. It was great to rest, relax and explore a different area of Goergian Bay. It will be a great place to visit again, they had a great trail network and a number of things to see and do. There was a very cool breeze coming off the bay, so we did not get to explore as much as we wished. We will have to go back sometime when we have more time and its a little warmer.

We went for a drive a few weeks ago and ended up in Meaford, who where getting ready for the scarecrow festival happening the weekend of Oct 4 & 5. There where alot of neat scarecrows around town. We also had a good lunch at the Leeky Canoe. After touring around town and window shopping we took the long way home thru Walter Falls and back roads to see the great fall colors through out the country side. B loved the car ride and seeing all the new places he could leave his mark on!

We visited Ontario's first fish ladder to watch the fish migrate upstream.  Chinook Salmon migrate in September to October. The fish ladder here at the Owen Sound Mill Dam allows fish to reach their spawning beds upstream on the Sydenham River. The mill dam is located on the east side of 2nd Avenue West between 4th Street West and 7th Street West. B liked watching the fish splash in the river. Tried to go swimming with them!

Had an afternoon off, so arranged to meet a friend and her family, just south of Thornbury. Had a lovely chat and met the newest members of their family. After a great supper we headed back home, but made a quick stop at Eugenia Falls and a pretty drive thru Beaver Valley. Very beautiful country there. Water was low at Eugenia Falls, so I'm sure it is pretty spectacular when there is more water running over it. It was peaceful and pretty when we saw it, a nice relaxing stop after a great day of visiting. We hope to go back in the near future, when we have more time to explore. In the first picture, can you see the guy rock climbing?

Had the in-laws camp-sit for a few hours, so we went for alittle drive. Had lunch in Lion's head then headed south to Barrow bay and Hope Bay. Some very nice cottages and scenic places along the way. We then headed into Cape Croker. We stopped at little parkette that had some very pretty views of the bay and interesting totem poles. We pushed further along the peninsula and ended up at the light house. It was very peaceful and beautiful. Stopped to spot some fossils on the rocky beach, then headed into Wiarton to do some shopping and see what was happening for Wiarton Wednesday. It was a good day for siteseeing and a brief escape from the camp.

Geocaching near Sauble Beach

Geocaching near Sauble Beach
b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_4095.JPG
Yesterday myself, B and campers Gordie & Arles went geocaching just south of Sauble beach. It was a fun 3 hours and we found 6 caches. Some were a bit more challenging then others. The picture above was one that took a bit more time to actually spot, then to figure out how to get it down. Very inguenious, then another B found - he sniffed it out (see pic below). it was fun driving around and poking around. Geocaching takes you down roads and places you would not normally go or see. There are some spectacular inland views in the area. Once you get into it there are many caches to be found in the area and you can do this activity all over the world. If you are not sure what I'm talking about check out the website www.geocaching.com   I hope I get to do more geocaching and all I want for Christmas is a handheld GPS, so I don't have to fight Gordies for his all the time. ;) If anyone has more questions about this, please contact us. I'll answer to the best of my ability, but I've only just started and I'm hooked, but have a lot to...

Visited Summer House & Mountain Trout Camps

Visited Summer House & Mountain Trout Camps
We have been busy since the middle of May, getting the camp ready for our campers. We had a terrific opening May long weekend. Since then we have been mowing lawn and building small things to better equip the campground. Also we have had a number of new seasonals sign up, so we are busy getting them settled. So it was nice to get away for an afternoon to go to our regional campground meeting, which was hosted by Summer House Park. We got a tour of the camp and a BBQ. It was delicious. As usual we learned alot of great things from the meeting and it was great to share common stories and issues that all campgrounds have. Summer house Park is a well treed and beautiful; park. They have lots of amentias and sites to choose from. They are a similar camp to us, just on a bigger scale. After, we were invited to go to Mountain Trout Camp, since they are only 10 min away. Very nice camp as well. They just finished building a new dock area which is beautiful and there camp has lots of trees and is very pretty. They are similar in...

Drive to Big Bay

Drive to Big Bay
b2ap3_thumbnail_Big-bay-pier.JPG
We had some spare time last week and went for a small drive. We ended up at Big Bay. You could see the islands in the Georgian Bay from there and it looks like they would have a nice beach in the summer. I really like the sign you see in the picture. It was too windy to try, but someday I'll go back. I used to be pretty good. A few years ago I remember visiting Big Bay for some good ice cream at the general store - seems like it is still there, but closed till May. If you are ever in the area this summer, drop by Big Bay for their beach and ice cream.

Rotary Maple Breakfast by Wiarton

Rotary Maple Breakfast by Wiarton
Last weekend, with a group of new friends, we attended the Rotary Breakfast at the Sugar Shack @ Regal Point Elk Farm. They had many things to do. The best being the tour of the elk, where we got to meet and learn a lot of interesting facts about the elk and elk farm operations. You could also take a tour of their maple sugar operations, which was also very interesting. The guide was very informative and easy to chat to. He was great in answering our many questions we had. Being new to the Wiarton area, we were unaware of the many diverse industries in the area. The main feature of the event was delicious and very filling. The pancakes were fluffy and the sausages very tasty. Of course the maple syrup was superb! There was also a Willie walk, which was harder than it seemed. We were enjoying our maple taffy too much to pay attention and missed some. The children in the group ahead of us were very helpful. Also Wille himself showed up and lots of photos were taken. See- even Willie can come out on a cooler day to sample some great local food and...
